Ethyl Butyrate is an ester, also commonly known as Ethyl Butanoate and Butyric Ether. Although it can be found in trace amounts in various fruits, it is commercially synthesized through a condensation reaction, by reacting ethanol and butyric acid.
This flavoursome ester is very popular for use as a flavouring agent in orange juices, alcoholic cocktails and beers, and other applications in the food and beverages sector. It is a colourless liquid and has a fruity, banana, orange, or pineapple like flavour and scent. This makes it a popular choice as a solvent in perfumes too. In the industrial sector, Ethyl Butyrate is also used as a surfactant and emulsifier.
