Grapefruit Essential Oil is extracted through the compression of the peel of the bitter-sweet citrus known as Grapefruit. This fruit is also quite aptly known scientifically as Citrus Paradise. Two other scientific names for Grapefruit are Citrus Racemosa and Citrus Maxima.
The compositional makeup of Grapefruit Essential Oil comprises limonene, alpha-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, geraniol, linalool, citronellal, decyl acetate, neryl acetate, and terpineol. Grapefruit also contains principle constituents such as caryophyllene, delta cadinene and nootkatone. These sesquiterpenes contribute to the richness of the Grapefruit Oil compared to other citrus oil species, with the sesquiterpene-ketone, nootkatone, being one of the most sought-after aromatic compounds in the world. Despite only naturally having a 0.1 – 0.2% presence in the Oil, the presence of nootkatone contributes as one of the primary sensory profiles for Grapefruit Oil, demonstrating that it is the most important compound in Grapefruit Oil to the flavour and fragrance industry.
