Repelling Insects the Safe and Natural Way

The arrival of summer gifts us with many wonders in the natural world. Warm summer days, soft summer rains, exciting thunderstorms, and so many more. Unfortunately, summertime also means needing to find a safe and effective way to repel insects.

With society awakening to the damage chemical-based repellents and pesticides cause to the environment, as well as the hazard they are to the health of humans and animals, these customary repellents are clearly no longer an option. This leaves many wading hopelessly through a vast array of natural repellents with no idea what works best and why.

To try and assist in this search and make things a little easier, we have outlined two of our top natural insect repellents:

• Citronella: Today, Citronella Essential Oil is one of the most commonly used oils to repel insects, especially mosquitos. Historically, Citronella Oil was used for similar purposes by the ancient Greek’s and Romans. It can be used topically; mixed with a cream and applied to the skin. It can also be used as a room spray or by making Citronella candles. The Citronella scent helps to mask the smells that would attract insects, thereby safely repelling them instead.

• Eucalyptus Citriodora: This Essential Oil has a sweet lemon scent. It is also known as Gum Tree, Corymbia Citriodora and Lemon-Scented Essential Oil. This Essential Oil can be added to carrier oils to be able to apply it topically. It can also be added to a diffuser or used as a room spray to keep the insects at bay. In addition to working well as a natural insect repellent, this oil also works to soothe the irritation, itchiness, swelling and redness of insect bites.
